INTRODUCTION
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Close Protection Operations is designed to provide:
- Training for those in the security industry
- Opportunities for close protection operatives to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification
- Opportunities for full-time learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in the field of security or to progress to further vocational qualifications such as the Foundation Degree in Security Services
- The knowledge, understanding and skills learners need to qualify for a licence to practice as a close protection operative
- Opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major key skills and the wider key skills in a security context, such as improving own learning and performance, working with others and problem solving
- Opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.
The Structure
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Close Protection Operations is a 150-hour qualification consisting of five units of 30 hours each:
Unit 1: Skills and Teamwork in Close Protection
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Close Protection Operative
- Understand the importance of interpersonal skills within the close protection environment
- Understand the importance of close protection teamwork
Unit 2: Legislation, Communications and Conflict Management Skills in Close Protection
- Understand the impact on law and legislation on close protection
- Understand the relationship between Close Protection Operatives and official agencies
- Understand the need for communication and conflict management
- Be able to use communication and conflict management skills.
Unit 3: Risk Assessment, Operational Planning and Safe Route Selection
- Understand threat assessment and risk management
- Be able to use operational planning skills
- Know about route selection
Unit 4: Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Incidents
and Dilemmas
- Be able to demonstrate surveillance, counter-surveillance and anti-surveillance methods and skills
- Be able to carry out reconnaissance
- Be able to deal with incidents and dilemmas within close protection
Unit 5: Techniques for Close Protection Operatives
- Be able to use close protection foot techniques
- Be able to use close protection vehicle techniques
- Be able to use correct search procedures
- Understand venue-based security
ASSESSMENT
Candidates must achieve:
- A pass in an externally set and marked multiple-choice test, and
- A pass for an internally set and assessed portfolio, which includes a practical assessment.
These two assessments, taken together, will cover ALL the criteria of ALL five units.
Duration
This award is a 150-hour qualification (excluding learner-initiated private study) that is usually run over a period of 3 weeks.
Optional: 5 weekend course available.
Delivery
The Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Close Protection Operations involves a balance of theory and practice.
Entry Requirements
Candidates are required to be over 18 years of age. In addition, candidates are suggested to have a reasonable level of health and fitness.
